Batman Comic Book Auctions

Batman comic book sold at auction
Almost no other comic book hero has become quite so synonymous with strength, skill, prowess, and intelligence. It’s little wonder that Golden Age (1938 to 1956) and Silver Age (1956 to 1970) comics featuring Batman fetch incredible prices at auction.

Batman Issue #1

Batman’s very first appearance wasn’t Batman, but Detective Comics #27.  A rare copy of the book recently sold for more than $1 million.

By Spring of 1940, the character of Batman, along with his sidekick, Robin, had become popular enough to earn them their own book, launching Batman #1.

A copy of Batman #1 sold for over $2.2 million.

What are Batman comics really worth?

Much depends on the condition of the comic, the historical significance of the issue, and the demand for that specific issue. If your Golden Age or Silver Age comic has no tears, no cracks, lies flat, and has bright colors, then you’re more likely to fetch a high price for it at auction.

The worth of specific issues can vary wildly. An issue of Batman #18 from August 1943 featuring Batman and Robin running away after apparently throwing a giant firecracker at Hitler, Mussolini, and Emperor Hirohito is worth around $6,000 in near-mint condition. Due to the historical significance of that issue you might expect it to be worth more than Issue #9, from February 1942, which simply features Batman and Robin flaring their capes while outlined by a police spotlight. Yet you’d be wrong: Issue #9 is rare enough to have sent the near-mint price up to $14,481.

You can visit ComicsPriceGuide.com to get a rought figure on any comic in any condition, but you’ll need to work with a professional appraiser and auctioneer to understand the true condition and worth, and then to sell it for the corresponding value at auction. Though you might be able to guess at the condition by using published grading scales, appraisers and collectors look for details that the layperson might miss.

What about other heroes?

Though Batman and Superman sell the highest among Golden Age comics, other titles do well, too, including The Flash, Captain America, Wonder Woman, and titles featuring some of the oldest DC and Marvel superheroes.

Want to get top dollar? Sell your Batman comics to collectors.

You’ll never get top dollar for your comic by selling it on Ebay. You won’t get top dollar by going to a comic book convention, either.

Instead, you’ll need to get your book in front of true collectors and enthusiasts who care about getting the finest Batman comics and who have holes in their collection that they want to fill. This means they know what the comic is worth and come ready to fight to take that comic home with them.
