What kinds of Wild West collectibles sell at auction?
Firearms and edged weapons: Antique revolvers and rifles from the frontier era – Colt Single Action Army revolvers (“Peacemakers”), Winchester repeating rifles, and Civil War-era sidearms that made their way West – are among the most valuable items in the category. Provenance matters enormously: a gun documented to have belonged to a specific outlaw, lawman, or notable figure can be worth tens of times what an otherwise identical gun is worth. Cowboy and ranch equipment: Silver-mounted spurs, ornate holsters, hand-tooled saddles, and chaps from working cowboys and exhibition riders can command serious prices. Show gear used by Wild West show performers – Buffalo Bill’s Wild West in particular – is especially collectible.
Wild West show posters and advertising: Original lithographic posters from Buffalo Bill’s Wild West, Pawnee Bill, and other touring shows are among the most spectacular pieces of Western Americana. Photographs and documents: Albumen prints and cabinet cards depicting cowboys, lawmen, Native Americans, and frontier life are widely collected. Photographs of known figures, like Billy the Kid, Wyatt Earp, Jesse James, and Calamity Jane, are extraordinarily rare and command extraordinary prices. Native American art and artifacts: Beaded garments, blankets, pottery, baskets, and ceremonial objects from Plains and Southwestern tribes are actively collected. Navajo blankets in particular have sold for very large sums at major auction houses. Why New England has Western Americana
You might be surprised to find Wild West collectibles in New England estates, but it makes sense. Many Northeasterners traveled West in the 19th century, and the Wild West shows (Buffalo Bill performed all over this region) left behind programs, posters, and souvenirs. Families who collected Western art and artifacts throughout the 20th century are now passing those collections on.
