What old football cards are worth the most?
As with baseball and basketball cards, age and player are the two biggest drivers of value. Cards from the pre-Super Bowl era and the early NFL are genuinely rare.
High-value vintage football cards to know:
- 1935 National Chicle Football: the very first major football card set. Cards featuring Bronko Nagurski are among the most valuable football cards in existence.
- 1948 Bowman Football: the first post-war football card set, featuring Sammy Baugh and other early legends.
- 1957 Topps Football: a landmark set featuring rookie cards of Johnny Unitas, Paul Hornung, and Bart Starr. Unitas is the key card.
- 1965 Topps Football: features Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus rookie cards, two of the most sought-after in the hobby.
- 1976 Topps Football: Walter Payton’s rookie card. In high grades, serious money.
- 1981 Topps Football: Joe Montana’s rookie card.
- 1984 Topps USFL Football: contains Steve Young’s only widely available “rookie” card from his early career. Overlooked by many, valued by serious collectors.
- 1986 Topps Football: Jerry Rice’s rookie card. High-grade Rice rookies have sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Condition and grading
