We are nearing the end of our top 10 list of antiques and collectibles. Number 2 is “antique and classic automobiles and motorcycles”.
When 500 vintage cars from a Pierce, Nebraska car dealership were auctioned in 2013 the History Channel’s “Top Gear” television show described it as a “Field of Dreams”. According to Auto News, Lambrecht Chevrolet dealership went out of business in 1996 and the cars from the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s were unsold inventory. A 1958 Chevrolet El Camino was the first car sold bringing $140,000. The 2 day total was over $2.8 million.
A great “barn find” of a rare car can make a big splash in the car collecting community. A 1925 Bugatti Brescia automobile was under a tarp in a French barn for over 40 years. When it came to auction in July, it brought over $950,000.
Closer to home five perfectly preserved cars were discovered in a Texas barn. They were a “1932 Cadillac 370B V-12 Victoria Convertible, 1933 Cadillac Model 370C V-12 Town Coupe, 1938 Cadillac Series 90 V-16 Fleetwood Limo, 1923 Milburn Electric Model 27L, and a 1908 REO Model G Boattail Roadster/Sedan Tonneau”. Estimated value was over $700,000.
We had the opportunity to sell a 1941 Chrysler Saratoga that brought nearly $7,000 at our September 2013 auction. Although it wasn’t one of the more highly desirable models it still fetched a good price.
What are some of the differences in classic cars that are worth figures in the hundreds of thousands versus those only worth thousands? One factor is the quality of the car. The Bugatti that was found in France is a high performance car made by a world renowned manufacturer. Condition is important. Collectors will pay more for undamaged cars with original parts. Sports cars are highly sought after by collectors. You will find many more buyers for your Corvette than your Corvair.
Motorcycles also are very popular with collectors. Old Harley Davidson, Indian, Triumph and other motorcycles have their devotees. Even a tin wind-up toy motorcycle can bring figures in the $1000’s.
Memorabilia and advertising signs associated with automobiles and motorcycles can also command strong prices. Signs advertising everything from the cars and motorcycles themselves to parts, tires, gasoline and oil are very popular with bidders. Other collectible items include old gas pumps, vintage license plates and antique hood ornaments.
Next week’s article will feature number 1 on our top 10 list of antiques and collectibles.
